Honoring Tony Campolo

Today, we grieve the loss of Tony Campolo, one of the most influential voices in the American church. Tony's legacy is one of prophetic vision, profound wisdom, and unrelenting hope in the kingdom of God. His life and work were marked by an unwavering commitment to justice, a deep affirmation of this world as beloved by God, and a belief that the kingdom of heaven is not a distant dream but a reality breaking into the here and now.

On a personal note, Tony Campolo was one of the first theologians I ever read, and his words shaped me in ways that I will carry forever. I will never forget meeting him, circa 2007, after he gave a message at a chapel service at Azusa Pacific University. I walked up to him, somewhat star struck, and before I could finish saying the words, "thank you," he reached for me with his small frame and gave me a hug. It took me off guard, but it made a lasting impression on me. Tony was sincere and his love for people was heartfelt.

Through his books and sermons, he taught me to see the world differently—not as something from which to escape, but a place to engage with God’s love and justice. He called the church to action, to care for the least of these, and to live in ways that reflect the radical inclusivity and generosity of Christ.

Tony helped me understand that faith is not only about personal salvation but about embodying the love of God in the world around us. His voice challenged me, inspired me, and ultimately led me to embrace the calling to work toward justice and renewal in the here and now.

We give thanks for Tony Campolo's life and ministry, for his courage to speak truth, and for his relentless hope in what God is doing among us. May his memory inspire us to continue walking in the way of Jesus, seeking justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.

Rest in peace, Tony Campolo, and thank you for pointing so many of us toward Jesus.
