A Prayer for Understanding

God of mercy and grace,

Even the most brilliant among us—even the greatest minds—are limited in their apprehension of reality. While we struggle to solve the puzzles around us, you have come to us as mystery. Do not merely give us more knowledge. Do not give us another solution. But, Lord, give us understanding so that we may live in the mystery. Let us not seek to resolve the mysteries of your love, but let us be content to exist in them and to participate in them as those who understand the incomprehensibility of the world. Humble us so that we might know your will and be your disciples. Remove every distraction of ambition, selfishness, and fear. Help us to surrender to you as you reveal yourself to us. We are yours. Amen.
