Falling Slowly

"Take this sinking boat and point it home, we've still got time.
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
you've made it now.
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along."

These lyrics from Glen Hansard's song "Falling Slowly" from the motion picture "Once" (one of the best movies I've seen all year), which probably were never meant to be used for a post like this, have been lingering on my mind especially when I take communion.

These lyrics capture an element of the church that I usually miss. sometimes we are so success oriented in the Church that we miss the people around us. Just going on statistics, we will probably all die someday... everyone who's come before us has. We may never see the end of all our work before we go, we may not see any success within the terms we are looking for them. But we do have time to head in the right direction together. I have time to take the bread and drink from the cup with the scores of people who are doing the same thing. We do have time to sing.

...mourning... ...celebration... ...song...

How does one fall slowly?
