Thoughts Before Maundy Thursday

When I hear "the body of Christ" I think of Eucharist. I think of the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus and wonder if Paul wasn't thinking of the same thing. The Church is a sacrament, a physical effecttion of God's grace into the world, of God's atonement. The Church always remembers that Jesus "emptied himself" and was tortured and "broken" for solidarity. As the Eucharistic body of Christ, we are a physical reminder of this as we suffer to bring people together, even the subjugated and unacceptable.

Maybe this Thursday, Maundy Thursday, as you take the bread and drink the wine you may think of the body of Christ and begin to see new ways to wash your neighbor's feet. Maybe you'll begin to see new ways that you can empty yourself and be God's grace... maybe we can become the atonement.

What does it mean to be the Church?
