Being Activists...

There is a lot of pressure for Christians, especially college student ones, to get involved in society, to change the world, to bring social reform, etc. This pressure is good. Jesus called for social reform, Jesus got angry about things, and Jesus changed the world. We do need to follow Jesus lead and call for social reform as well. But we do need to choose our battles. It’s evident in Christian politics that we care a lot more about gay marriage than we do about poverty and genocide in Darfur. Being an activist is good but we need to choose wisely what we are active about. Though our heart is in the right place we are wasting our energy on the wrong things. I know for college students it’s very difficult. We’re so desperate to make a difference but it’s so hard to see how we can do it. So we pour our energy into protesting new building plans on campus and arguing about how our school should spend its money. Sometimes I think its just because we can’t find anything real to get involved in.

How should I make a difference? I really want to find the right battles to fight but how on earth am I supposed to fight them? It is because we don’t know how to answer these questions that we essentially give up on the real problems and pour our lives into the small things. And why is it that we do not have the answers to these questions? I believe it is because the Church has failed in its real mission which is in part to be the representation of the Kingdom of God on Earth. The Church should be a conduit through which we in wealth can reach those in poverty. My hope for the future of the Church is that it will make this question, “how should I make a difference?,” a little easier to answer and that it would provide the ways in which to do actually do it.

Amen Wes The church as a whole failed during the Civil rights era as well. We are supposed to support life not death and oppression for people.
